The Posadas: Christmas Tradition of Mexico, By Marilynn Hughes – Songs sung in Spanish and English in Large Print for the Traditional Posadas so that they may be sung in the dark lit by candlelight as you go from door to door. (No music included. Lyrics only.) These are the individual songbooks for the congregation of the Posadas in both Spanish and English.

The Posadas is a traditional Mexican celebration that takes place during the nine days leading up to Christmas, from December 16th to 24th. The event commemorates Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter in Bethlehem, as described in the Nativity story. Participants reenact their journey, visiting different homes or locations, singing carols, and asking for lodging, symbolizing the couple’s search for a place to stay. The procession is marked by lively music, prayer, and the sharing of food, creating a festive and communal atmosphere. Each night culminates in a joyful celebration with breaking of piñatas and sharing of treats, emphasizing themes of hospitality, community, and faith. The Posadas are a beloved cultural and religious tradition in Mexico and other Latin American countries, celebrating the anticipation of Christ’s birth and bringing together families and communities in festive unity.
