To understand why purification is necessary, we must abandon the modern idea that the soul is merely an abstract, formless thought. The ancient mystics, sages, and esoteric philosophers viewed the soul as a definite energetic anatomy [theological baseline]. It possesses structure, subtle matter, and—most importantly—a specific spiritual gravity.
In the unseen realms, your destination is not determined by a judgment decree; it is determined by your density. If the soul is heavy, it sinks. If it is light, it ascends [theological baseline].
Here is how humanity’s oldest contemplative traditions mapped the literal “weight” of the soul and its behavior upon leaving the physical frame.
1. Egyptian Mythos: The Weighing of the Heart (Psychostasia)
In ancient Egyptian theology, the journey into the afterlife or the unmanifest realms is governed by a precise metaphysical math. In the Hall of Ma’at, the Ib (the heart/soul, representing the seat of consciousness, memory, and deeds) is placed on a golden scale. On the other side sits the feather of Ma’at—the cosmic principle of truth, balance, order, and purity.
- The Heavy Soul: If the heart is heavy with the density of unpurified deeds, attachments, and ego, the scale tips. This weight renders the soul unviable for ascension into the celestial Aaru (the Reed Fields), and it is consumed by the lower forces (Ammit), forcing a fracturing or recycling of consciousness.
- The Light Soul: The goal of the initiate was to refine their consciousness through a life of spiritual alignment until their soul was literally as light as a feather. Only then could the traveler bypass the gatekeepers of the Duat and ascend to the stellar realms of Osiris.
2. Orphic and Platonic Cosmology: The Chariot and the Mud
The Orphic mysteries and Plato (specifically in the Phaedrus) described the soul as an entity equipped with wings. In its pure state, the soul naturally soars into the upper regions where the divine realities dwell.
- The Sinking of the Wings: Plato explained that when a soul gives in to vice, unbridled passions, and malice, its spiritual “wings” rot and fall away. The soul loses its buoyancy.
- The Astral Mire: Burdened by the dense vibrations of material craving, the unpurified soul develops a heavy, earthly shell. Upon leaving the body—whether in sleep, trance, or death—this heavy soul cannot rise. It is magnetically dragged down to the “mud” of the lower astral regions, wandering near the earth plane or trapped in dark, chaotic geometries that match its internal state.
3. Gnostic and Hermetic Archontic Ascent: The Tollbooths of Density
In Gnostic and Hermetic cosmologies, the cosmos is structured like a series of concentric spheres (the planetary spheres), each ruled by an Archon or cosmic governor. Each sphere represents a specific psychological and energetic density (e.g., pride, desire, wrath, greed).
- The Cosmic Toll: As the soul ascends through these spheres during an out-of-body journey, it must pass through these planetary gates. If the soul still holds the heavy, unpurified frequency of a specific vice, that gatekeeper acts like a magnet, catching the soul by its corresponding weight.
- The Fluid Passage: The path of purification is the process of shedding these planetary densities while still alive. When the initiate has purged these traits from their character, the soul becomes transparent. When it ascends, the gatekeepers find nothing to grab onto, and the soul glides effortlessly through the spheres into the Pleroma—the boundless divine light.
The Metaphysical Law of Flotation
This historical consensus reveals a universal law: What you conquer in your character, you conquer in the cosmos.
Purification is not a moral punishment; it is the science of spiritual buoyancy. By actively working through your attachments, unburdening your heart, and cleansing your subconscious, you are stripping away the heavy lead of the ego and replacing it with the gold of the spirit.
y spiritual frequency, we finally allow our unique creative expression to be taken aloft into greater love and light.
The Living Reality of Soul Weight: Insights from Forty Years of Mystical Exploration
While ancient texts provide the intellectual framework for spiritual gravity, it is through direct, first-hand mystical exploration that these metaphysical laws become living reality. In my forty years of out-of-body travel—as detailed in my book, The Mysteries of the Redemption: A Treatise on Out-of-Body Travel and Mysticism—I have repeatedly witnessed that the “weight” of a soul is a literal, functional force in the unseen realms. Our lightness of being on a soul level is determined by our spiritual frequency, not by physical measure.
Below is the sequential mapping of how spiritual weight dictates the soul’s capacity for flight, safety, and ultimate redemption.
1. The Ball and Chain: How Vice Anchors the Soul
In the lower spheres, unrepentant sin and egoic attachments manifest as a literal, immovable mass. Knowing my purpose during one exploration, I tried to assist a man in exiting a dark place. With all my might, I began pushing him upwards towards the tiny portal in which he had fallen, but he would not budge. No matter how hard I tried, attempting to lift this heavy-laden soul out of the hell only depleted my own energies with no outward result or favor.
Realizing that it was the actual weight of his soul which made it impossible for him to go higher, his unrepentant sin had become like a ball and chain. As much as I would have liked to save him, he was compatible to this hell. As each lifetime is held onto, the weight of original sin increases because of the soul’s belief in multiplicity and the importance of these separate lives. Heavy laden by his soul’s weight and defilement, my energy was completely depleted and it took me several minutes to engage enough energy to soar up to the portal and emerge.
2. The Celestial Release: Holy Chants and Angelic Song
Conversely, our compatibility to heavenly realms is determined by the actual “weight” of the soul, a lightness of spirit. Becoming more and more weightless makes it possible to travel to higher and higher heavens.
During an ascent, I heard souls chanting in harmonic and resonant tones. Their voices echoed through the stars which lay in the distance beyond an open hallway of stained glass. Joining in their singing, my spirit knew their music. My voice began echoing louder than all the others, and my singing somehow sent my spirit ever faster towards the entrance to heaven. Arriving at the gate, I suddenly knew that these chants and hymns the angels and I sang released actual weight from the soul, dropping off the heavy vibrations of physical existence. Ecstasy echoing, my soul floated closer and closer to the gate and became one in song with the angelic kingdom.
3. The Mechanics of Surrender: Escaping Astral Deceptions
When lost or targeted by deceptive forces in the lower realms, the instinct of the ego is to fight or run—both of which utilize heavy, earthly control. True liberation requires absolute surrender to higher divine forces.
Once, when getting lost in a dark realm, some nasty spirits had come to trick me. Confused and scared, I didn’t have any idea how to escape from this plight, so after running this way and that, I simply stopped. Allowing the weight of my spirit to completely surrender, I expected to fall to the ground in a huge thud, but instead, as I surrendered to Christ, I shot like a rocket away from this horrible place, now standing in the center of two large mountains.
Surrendering my soul to God, I let go of all physical and spiritual control of my faculties. If I had been in a physical body, I would have fallen to the ground from the weight of surrender, but in the spirit, surrender caused my soul to be lifted into a flight directed by the Lord. Having given my soul to patience, and allowing it to fall from its own forces, it was able to accept higher ones, thus causing heavenly movement.
4. The Path of Transcendence: Navigating Weightlessness
As a soul undergoes purification and masters the sequential steps of transcendence, it encounters a unique paradox: the lighter you become, the more difficult it is to navigate using old methods of focus.
While progressing fifteen steps behind on the pathway to transcendence because of distractions, I soared with purpose and got through the first ten steps with ease. However, those ahead of me were proceeding with difficulty now because of the different concentrations required upon each of the final five steps. Landing in each individual slot was difficult, because the soul became more weightless from the first ten steps. Floating out of control, it became difficult to grab hold of the next step.
Looking beyond me, I was beckoned by a soul who had become transparent and spoke to me from a higher place. She warned me that I was allowing myself to be distracted and must go on. Achieving transcendence by God’s grace, I realized that in a world filled with vice, distraction is our enemy. We must maintain immortality and pure love, which feel entirely weightless to the soul.
5. Teaching the Soul to Fly: Resting in God’s Love
This lightness of being is required of every soul before it can graduate from mortal existence into the paradise spheres. I remember teaching a young six-year-old girl how to fly at a large schooling facility in the heavens, where we were working with souls sub-consciously to bring about their redemption.
Holding her hand, I grasped her around the waist and told her to hold tight. Running quickly, we jumped over a cliff and into the sky, flying with ease. But when I pushed her off to fly on her own, she was unable to do it. Weighing too much, she was also afraid to do it by herself. By weighing too much I in no way mean a physical measure, for she was quite a tiny girl.
Taking her back to the ground, I spoke to her of letting go and flying free within the love of God. “Your soul is too heavy, my child.” Although I’d seen many souls, especially in certain hell realms, whose spiritual weight was a great deal heavier; her soul was just a bit too heavy to fly. “You need to feel safe in the Lord, be willing to stand alone, and soar into your love of God. Then you will fly on your own, my child.”
I conveyed to her that I could not save everyone in the world because they were too heavy. Needing to remember her uniqueness within the realm of God’s thinking, this would allow her to feel safe in taking her unique creative expression aloft. In the end we all fly alone towards the pillar of the Lord. Resting easy in God’s love for our individuality, we must maintain humility within our own smallness. Awakening to these mysteries, we may graduate from this mortal existence into the paradise spheres of greater love and light.
The Path of Purification is the non-negotiable baseline for safe and high-reaching out-of-body travel, serving as the spiritual science of the soul’s buoyancy. While contemporary exploration focuses heavily on the mechanics of leaving the physical body, ancient mystical traditions and firsthand modern experiences confirm that our destination in the unseen realms is dictated entirely by spiritual gravity. Unrepentant sin, worldly attachments, and egoic distractions increase the density of the soul, anchoring consciousness to the chaotic distortions of the lower astral planes. Conversely, by systematically purging the lower nature through radical humility, holy alignment, and absolute surrender to Christ, the traveler sheds these heavy physical vibrations. This process allows the soul to become weightless and transparent, safely bypassing lower astral deceptions to ascend into the boundless light and love of the highest celestial heavens.
